Quicksand: Formed out of the late-1980s New York hardcore scene by former Gorilla Biscuits frontman Walter Schreifels, Quicksand helped pioneer 1990s post-hardcore. By combining heavy, drop-tuned guitar riffs with abrasive punk energy and subtle melody, their landmark albums—Slip (1993) and Manic Compression (1995)—became massive influences on alternative metal acts like Deftones, Helmet, and Incubus. After breaking up in the mid-90s, the group reunited permanently in 2012 and has since released acclaimed records including Interiors (2017) and Distant Populations (2021).
